Every year, delegates from all program areas make their way to the polls at the Capitol and the Hilton Hotel. Delegates make informed choices based on their knowledge of the candidates and submit their ballot. As the focus is mainly on casting their vote, the vital role of the voting system itself is often overlooked. The efficient nature of the polling system is thanks to those holding down the fort in the voting room. They direct delegates and ensure things stay organized.
While voter turnout is a frequent problem in real-life elections, it seems that voters in theMinnesota Youth in Government are both engaged and excited to vote. “Voter turnout has been excellent this year, it’s been busy,” said Eshaan Ambrose from the Orono delegation, a member of the Youth Governor’s Cabinet. Large voter turnouts ensure that an accurate representation of the people is displayed by their leader, meaning a fair election.
Secretary of State Yahrina Barreto Paredes from the Fridley delegation finds that running the voting process means ensuring fair and equal election to all candidates. This theme emerged throughout all of those supporting the voting system. They are not dreading the counting, nor bored with their work in the polling room. Those involved with the organization of the voting process all strive to create a better YIG for all delegates. They play an equally important role as the actual candidates running for office.
The counting process, although it seems intimidating at first, is actually simple when broken down by the Secretary of State. “Counting votes will take about an hour. It depends on how people vote. We hand count, and it’s actually really fun because we get to bond during the process,” said Yahrina Barreto-Paredes from the Fridley delegation.
The members of the polling team do an excellent job of ensuring YIG has a fair and equal voting system, leaders that represent YIG values. The best part of it is that they enjoy the entire process.
