Delegates began the weekend by rushing bags into hotel rooms and gathering for one of the two opening ceremonies. Then, the program areas got off to a productive start in both the hotel and capitol. New and returning members alike are excited for the opportunities and relationships that come with the conference. Piper Arcand from the Mounds View delegation says, “I’ve really loved getting to know so many people from all over the state and making those connections.”

First-time delegates have much to look forward to this year. Oliver Miller from the Central delegation starts his first year of YIG excited “to meet new people and listen to each person’s ideas.” Along with that, Siya Singh from Orono says, “I’m excited to meet new people and talk about a bill I’m really passionate about.” YIG gives students the chance to find their voices and make great friends.

Students return to YIG every year to create new memories and gain new skills. Mira Berndt from Central says, “I love how YIG gives you a better understanding of the government, and helps you get to know what is going on around you.” Chloe Lennon from Rogers says, “The thing that most brings me back to YIG each year is the relationships I create and the wonderful support system that is created between delegates.” Others agree that YIG offers many formative experiences and chances to form new friendships. “I like the opportunity to cultivate my skills in a practical way and meet people I wouldn’t normally meet,” says Berit Rosenstiel from St. Anthony.

Have a great conference and don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. You may make a new best friend!
